It is with profound sadness that we share news of the passing of retired Arlington County Circuit Court Judge James Frederick “Jim” Almand on May 14, 2026.
Judge Almand devoted his life to the service of Arlington County, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the legal profession. Born in Arlington on October 18, 1948, Jim Almand built an extraordinary legacy as an attorney, legislator, jurist, mentor, and civic leader whose impact on Virginia’s legal community will be felt for generations.
A graduate of the College of William & Mary and William & Mary Law School, Judge Almand served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1978 until 2003, where he became one of the Commonwealth’s most respected leaders on matters involving the courts and the administration of justice. As chair of the House Courts of Justice Committee, he played a pivotal role in shaping Virginia’s judiciary and legal system with wisdom, fairness, and integrity.
Following his distinguished legislative service, Judge Almand served on the Circuit Court for the 17th Judicial Circuit, serving Arlington County and the City of Falls Church with distinction until his retirement in December 2011. Attorneys and colleagues alike remember him as thoughtful, patient, exceptionally prepared, and deeply committed to the rule of law and the dignity of every person who entered his courtroom.
In addition to his public service, Judge Almand was devoted to his family and community. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cindy Almand, and by his children, Andrew, Clare, and Brady Almand, and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at First Christian Church, 6165 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church on the morning of Saturday, May 30, 2026. More details to follow when available.
